Dow’s 2007 survey of big bale trends in the United Kingdom shows that baling silage remained the farming community’s overwhelming first choice over clamping during the 2006 season. Notably, a marked shift was seen towards baling silage for beef cattle, underlining the decline in the struggling UK dairy farming sector. Another finding is that haylage continued to rise in popularity during the 2006 season. The survey also shows that only 1 in 10 farmers now recycle their waste on site following the introduction of waste disposal legislation in the UK one year ago

The 2006 Dow sponsored survey reveals that while beef and suckler cows were the two main applications for baled silage in 2005, seven out of ten respondents were baling for horses, up from four out of ten in 2003 and 2004. Grass silage continues to be the dominant crop, with haylage an increasingly close second. The use of green film is increasing and proving particularly popular for haylage. Compared to previous seasons, there is to be a small reduction in numbers using four layers only, and an increase in the general use of six and eight layers."

This is the second year that Dow sponsors a survey aimed at finding out how baling and wrapping silage is developing in terms of wrap type, number of wraps, film colour, etc. The 2005 survey reveals new emerging markets and an increased emphasis on quality.
